Background and aim A healthy lifestyle is defined as a way of living that reduces the likelihood of severe illness or early death. Factors required for a healthy lifestyle, such as regular physical activity, better sleep patterns, improved dietary habits, probable caffeine consumption, and decreased feelings of anxiety, are generally assumed to be important for high academic performance. This study aims to investigate the correlation between a healthy lifestyle and academic success among health profession students at Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia. By doing so, we could potentially lead to the implementation of targeted interventions to support students in achieving their best academic potential. Methods This is an observational cross-sectional study conducted among health profession students at Umm Al-Qura University. An online questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic information and the impact of lifestyle characteristics on academic performance from October to November 2023. Data were analyzed using RStudio (R version 4.3.1). Results A total of 652 students participated in the study. The majority were between the ages of 18 and 25 years (97.2%, n=634). Females constituted the majority of the participants (69.9%, n=456). Regarding the field of study, the College of Medicine had the highest representation (52.9%, n=345). Regarding body mass index, the normal weight category was the most prevalent, encompassing 59.8% (n=390) of the participants. The results show that the participants generally had a good grade point average (GPA) in the range of 3.50 to 4.00. Also, the time spent on social media applications was not correlated with academic performance (P=0.575). Importantly, the majority of participants perceived that lifestyle habits impacted their academic performance. Conclusion This study found that unhealthy lifestyle factors, such as lack of physical activity, inadequate sleep, poor dietary choices, smoking, and mental health issues such as anxiety, have a negative impact on academic performance. Therefore, the dissemination of relevant knowledge is needed to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle and raise students' awareness.

BACKGROUND: The increasing pressure of their professional duties has led to a notable concern regarding the mounting anxiety levels among nurses. The ongoing discussion revolves around the efficacy of mindfulness as a means to alleviate anxiety in nurses. AIM: This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of mindfulness in reducing anxiety among nurses. METHODS: The evaluation followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. An extensive and comprehensive search was conducted across eight databases to identify studies that utilized randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and were published in English between 2011 and 2022. Independently, two reviewers assessed the validity of the randomized controlled trials using the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials criteria. Additionally, two authors independently employed the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-2) method to evaluate the potential bias in the RCTs. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trial studies that were deemed eligible were included in the current analysis. Based on the literature review, it was determined that mindfulness-based training can assist nurses in reducing their anxiety levels. Furthermore, the effectiveness of mindfulness-based programs in enhancing nurses' mindfulness and self-compassion has been firmly established. CONCLUSIONS: Based on existing literature, mindfulness-based interventions have proven to be effective in reducing anxiety levels among nurses. However, in order to enhance the overall quality of research, it is necessary to implement more rigorous controlled designs that include randomization. Additionally, larger sample sizes with a diverse range of participants are needed to establish and validate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based programs in alleviating anxiety among nurses. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Implementing mindfulness-based training in healthcare organizations can offer numerous benefits. One such advantage is that it can help nurses in reducing anxiety and enhancing their ability to handle the pressures associated with their profession. PURPOSE: This study aims to explore nurses' experiences of delivering spiritual care in an oncology setting. METHODS: An exploratory- descriptive qualitative design. Focus groups were conducted to gather data. The discussions were recorded and transcribed verbatim to ensure accuracy, credibility, and reliability. Inductive thematic analysis was performed to analyze the narratives, and the study's reporting followed the Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative studies. RESULTS: The study revealed four major themes: the spirituality from the perspective of oncology nurses, recognition of patients' spiritual needs, delivery of spiritual care to patients with cancer, and barriers in implementing spiritual care. The participants identified insufficient staff, lack of time, and insufficient knowledge and skills as obstacles to delivering spiritual care. CONCLUSION: This study offers a thorough understanding of how nurses provide spiritual care in an oncology setting. It is recommended that organizational interventions, such as increasing staff numbers, be implemented to enable nurses to provide more compassionate care. Furthermore, nursing curriculums should incorporate purposeful engagement and focused debriefing related to spiritual care to better equip nurses in identifying and meeting the spiritual needs of their patients.

Objective: The present study was designed to investigate the nephroprotective and immunoprotective effects of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) in comparison to N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against ochratoxin A (OTA) - intoxication. Methods: Forty-eight adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were categorized into four groups: Control; OTA intoxication (5 mg OTA/kg diet); OTA + NAC, rats received 200 mg NAC/day before feeding balanced diet contaminated with OTA; and (OTA + SAMe). Rats received 200 mg SAMe/day dissolved in distilled water orally just before feeding a balanced diet contaminated with OTA. Results: OTA administration altered serum kidney function biomarkers. These effects were pronouncedly alleviated by treatment with NAC. Results revealed a correlation between OTA-induced immunotoxicity and the reduced white blood cell (WBC) count. Treatments with SAMe significantly improved the WBCs count and hemoglobin concentration. Conclusion: NAC and SAMe have a protective role against nephrotoxicity and immunotoxicity induced by continuous administration of OTA. NAC was more effective in reducing OTA nephrotoxicity, whereas SAMe was more potent than NAC in reducing OTA immunotoxicity.

Este metaanálisis investiga el impacto de midazolam intratecal en la anestesia espinal, el control del dolor postoperatorio y los efectos secundarios relacionados con la anestesia en la cirugía de miembros inferiores. Realizamos una búsqueda en Medline, Science Direct, Google Scholar y Cochrane Library de los estudios que reportaron el inicio y la duración de los bloqueos sensorial y motor, el tiempo transcurrido hasta la primera solicitud de analgesia, el consumo de opioides durante 24h, el control del dolor postoperatorio y los efectos secundarios tras la administración de midazolam intratecal en pacientes sometidos a cirugía de miembros inferiores. Se identificaron 10 estudios, que se incluyeron en el metaanálisis. La revisión fue realizada siguiendo las directrices PRISMA, registrándose en la base de datos PROSPERO (ID-CRD42022346361) en agosto de 2022. Nuestros resultados muestran que los pacientes que reciben 1mg de midazolam intratecal reflejaron un tiempo de inicio de bloqueo significativamente más alto (p=0,001 [IC: −0,98, −0,31]), mayor duración de los bloqueos sensorial y motor (p<0,00001 [IC: 18,08, 39,12]; p=0,002 [IC: 0,45, 2]), y mayor tiempo transcurrido hasta la primera solicitud de analgesia de rescate (p=0,0003 [IC: 1,22, 4,14]). Las puntuaciones de dolor a las 4 y 12h postoperatorias fueron significativamente inferiores en los pacientes que recibieron midazolam intratecal (p=0,00001 [: −1,20, −0,47] y p=0,05 [IC: −0,52, −0,01] respectivamente). En conclusión, la adición de midazolam intratecal al anestésico local en la cirugía de miembros inferiores acorta el tiempo de inicio de los bloqueos sensorial y motor, incrementa la duración del bloqueo y prolonga el tiempo transcurrido hasta la primera solicitud de analgesia. Las puntuaciones del dolor a las 4 y 12horas postoperatorias fueron menores, no observándose efectos secundarios adicionales.(AU)


This meta-analysis was done to investigate the role of intrathecal midazolam in lower limb surgeries regarding prolongation of spinal block, postoperative pain control and associated side effects. The included studies reported onset and duration of sensory and motor block, time to first request analgesia, 24hours opioid consumption, postoperative pain control, and associated side effects following use of intrathecal midazolam for lower limb surgeries. This review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and using the online databases, Medline, Science Direct, Google scholar and Cochrane library. We registered this review with the PROSPERO database (ID-CRD42022346361) in August 2022. A total of 10 randomised controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis. Our results showed patients receiving 1mg intrathecal midazolam showed significantly faster onset of sensory block (P=.001 [CI: −0.98, −0.31]). Duration of sensory and motor block were also significantly prolonged in intrathecal midazolam group (P<.00001 [CI: 18.08, 39.12], P=.002 [CI: 0.45, 2]). Intrathecal midazolam also increased the time to first request analgesia (P=.0003 [CI: 1.22, 4.14]). Pain scores at 4 and 12hours postoperatively were significantly lower in patients receiving intrathecal midazolam (P=.00001[CI: −1.20, −0.47] and P=0.05 [CI: −0.52, −0.01] respectively). In conclusion, the addition of intrathecal midazolam to local anesthetics in lower limb surgeries results in early onset of sensory and motor block. It also increases the duration of sensory and motor block. The time to first request analgesia is increased. VAS pain scores at 4 and 12hours postoperatively were also lower without any increased side effects.(AU)

RESUMO

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a disease in which the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues throughout the body. Lupus myocarditis is a life-threatening condition, observed clinically in 3-9 % of patients with SLE. We report the case of a patient followed for multisystem SLE, presenting with de novo heart failure with severe left ventricular dysfunction revealing lupus myocarditis.

In this work, (99 - x)CaSO4 -Dy2 O3 -xEu2 O3 , (where x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) thermoluminescence phosphors were prepared using a coprecipitation method. The thermoluminescence (TL) dosimetry (TLD) characteristics such as TL sensitivity, dose-response, minimum detectable dose, thermal fading, and the effect of sunlight on the prepared phosphors were investigated. The obtained results indicated that the most sensitive phosphor was obtained at x = 0.05. Large thermal fading of 6% after 1 h and 26% after 24 h from irradiation followed by 71% after 1 month with no additional fading was observed within a time frame exceeding 2 months throughout the remaining duration of the investigation, which also spanned over 2 months. Despite the phosphor's high fading rate, the relative sensitivity of the prepared samples was ~90% compared with TLD-100. The marked effect of day sunlight was also determined. High dose-response within the low-dose range from 0.01 to 5 Gy was observed. The obtained results suggested that the synthesized phosphor is well suited for applications involving radiation biology and radiotherapy dosimetry.

Vacancy-ordered double perovskites (DPs) are emerging materials for spintronics due to their stable structures and non-toxic properties. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the role of 4d electrons in Tc to understand their impact on the ferromagnetic properties of K2TcY6 (Y = Cl, Br). We have employed a modified Back and Johnson potential to assess electronic and magnetic characteristics and utilized the BoltzTraP code to investigate thermoelectric effects. Experimental lattice constants confirmed the presence of stable structures and formation energy estimates affirmed their thermodynamic stability. The Heisenberg model and density of electron states (DOS) at the Fermi level provides insights into Curie temperature and spin polarization. The presence of ferromagnetism is evident in the density of states, reflecting the transition of electron spins that support the exchange mechanism. The study delves into how electron functionality influences the control of ferromagnetism, considering exchange constants, exchange energies, hybridization process and the crystal field energies. Moreover, the exploitation of magnetic moments from Tc to K and Cl/Br sites takes precedence in driving ferromagnetism by exchanging electron spins rather than forming magnetic clusters. Additionally, to explore the optical characteristics of the compounds, we investigated their optical absorption, dielectric constants and refractive index within the energy range of 0-10 eV, ensuring absorption across both the visible and ultraviolet regions. Finally, we delve into the impact of the thermoelectric effect on both thermoelectric performance and spin functionality, taking into account factors such as the Seebeck coefficient, power factor, and electronic conductivity.

Rapid population growth creating an excessive pressure on the marine environment and thus monitoring of marine ecosystem is essential. However, due to high technical and financial involvement, monitoring of coastal ecosystem is always challenging in developing countries. This study aims to develop an integrated coastal ecosystem monitoring system that combines scientific sampling, numerical model simulation and citizen science observations to monitor the coastal ecosystem of Bangladesh. This concept of integrated monitoring approach was piloted from January 2022 to April 2023 at the South East coastal zone of Bangladesh. Scientific sampling and numerical model simulations were performed for temperature and salinity data collection. Citizen science approach was employed to collect data on environmental conditions, fisheries, plankton, other marine resources, and plastic pollution. Numerical model simulations and citizen scientists observations of temperature and salinity showed good agreement with the scientifically collected data. In addition, citizen scientists observations on fisheries, plankton, other marine resources and plastic pollution were also in line with the existing database and previous studies. The proposed integrated monitoring approach presents a viable technique, creating a new avenue for coastal and marine ecosystem monitoring where infrastructural facilities are limited.

Zika virus (ZIKV) spread is considered a major public health threat by the World Health Organization (WHO). There are no vaccines or drugs available to control the infection of the Zika virus, therefore a highly effective medicinal molecule is urgently required. In this study, a computationally intensive investigation was performed to identify a potent natural compound that could inhibit the ZIKV NS5 methyltransferase. This research approach is based on target-based drug identification principles where the native inhibitor SAH (S-adenosylhomocysteine) of ZIKV NS5 methyltransferase was selected as a reference. High-throughput virtual screening and tanimoto similarity coefficient were applied to the natural compound library for ranking the potential candidates. The top five compounds were selected for interaction analysis, MD simulation, total binding free energy through MM/GBSA, and steered MD simulation. Among these compounds, Adenosine 5'-monophosphate monohydrate, Tubercidin, and 5-Iodotubercidin showed stable binding to the protein compared to the native compound, SAH. These three compounds also showed less fluctuations in RMSF in contrast to native compound. Additionally, the same interacting residues observed in SAH also made strong interactions with these three compounds. Adenosine 5'-monophosphate monohydrate and 5-Iodotubercidin had greater total binding free energies than the reference ligand. Moreover, the dissociation resistance of all three compounds was equivalent to that of the reference ligand. This study suggested binding properties of three-hit compounds that could be used to develop drugs against Zika virus infections.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

OBJECTIVE: To provide procedure-specific estimates of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) and major bleeding after abdominal surgery. BACKGROUND: The use of pharmacological thromboprophylaxis represents a trade-off that depends on VTE and bleeding risks that vary between procedures; their magnitude remains uncertain. METHODS: We identified observational studies reporting procedure-specific risks of symptomatic VTE or major bleeding after abdominal surgery, adjusted the reported estimates for thromboprophylaxis and length of follow-up, and estimated cumulative incidence at 4 weeks postsurgery, stratified by VTE risk groups, and rated evidence certainty. RESULTS: After eligibility screening, 285 studies (8,048,635 patients) reporting on 40 general abdominal, 36 colorectal, 15 upper gastrointestinal, and 24 hepatopancreatobiliary surgery procedures proved eligible. Evidence certainty proved generally moderate or low for VTE and low or very low for bleeding requiring reintervention. The risk of VTE varied substantially among procedures: in general abdominal surgery from a median of <0.1% in laparoscopic cholecystectomy to a median of 3.7% in open small bowel resection, in colorectal from 0.3% in minimally invasive sigmoid colectomy to 10.0% in emergency open total proctocolectomy, and in upper gastrointestinal/hepatopancreatobiliary from 0.2% in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy to 6.8% in open distal pancreatectomy for cancer. CONCLUSIONS: VTE thromboprophylaxis provides net benefit through VTE reduction with a small increase in bleeding in some procedures (eg, open colectomy and open pancreaticoduodenectomy), whereas the opposite is true in others (eg, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and elective groin hernia repairs). In many procedures, thromboembolism and bleeding risks are similar, and decisions depend on individual risk prediction and values and preferences regarding VTE and bleeding.

Abstract Increased anxiety and depressive symptoms have reported to be its association with long term illness. Because of having unwanted effects of newly available drugs, patients administering anxiolytic drugs usually discontinue the treatment before they are completely recovered. Therefore, there is a serious need to develop new anxiolytic drugs. The anxiolytic effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of Agaricus blazei in animal models was assessed. 24 male mice (Mus musculus genus) were included in the study. Four groups were prepared and each group contained six animals. The groups were vehicle control, positive control (diazepam 1.0 mg/kg, i.p.) as well as two treatment groups receiving Agaricus blazei hydro-alcoholic extract at a dose of 136.50 mg/kg and 273.0 mg/kg orally. The Marble burying test, Nestlet shredding test and Light and Dark box test used to assess anxiolytic activity. Mice administered with diazepam 1.0 mg/kg, i.p. while hydro-alcoholic extract of AbM (136.50 and 273.0 mg/kg, respectively) was administered via oral route which exhibited marked reduction in number of marbles-burying as compared to vehicle control group. Mice administered with diazepam 1.0 mg/kg, i.p. and Oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract of AbM (136.50 and 273.0 mg/kg, respectively) exhibited significant decrease in nestlet shredding in comparison to vehicle control group. The oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract at a dose of 136.5mg/kg and 273mg/kg showed elevation in time spent in light box and was comparable to standard treated group while time spent by mice following oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract of Agaricus blazei at a dose of 273.0 mg/kg also showed elevation and was found to be more near to standard treated group (diazepam 1 mg/kg, i.p.).


Resumo O aumento da ansiedade e dos sintomas depressivos têm relatado sua associação com doenças de longa duração. Por causa dos efeitos indesejáveis dos novos medicamentos disponíveis, os pacientes que administram medicamentos ansiolíticos geralmente interrompem o tratamento antes de estarem completamente recuperados. Portanto, há uma necessidade séria de desenvolver novos medicamentos ansiolíticos. Foi avaliado o efeito ansiolítico do extrato hidroalcoólico de Agaricus blazei em modelos animais. Vinte e quatro camundongos machos (gênero Mus musculus) foram incluídos no estudo. Quatro grupos foram preparados, e cada grupo continha seis animais. Os grupos foram controle de veículo, controle positivo (diazepam 1,0 mg/kg, i.p.), bem como dois grupos de tratamento recebendo extrato hidroalcoólico de Agaricus blazei na dose de 136,50 mg/kg e 273,0 mg/kg por via oral. O teste de enterrar Marble, o teste de retalhamento Nestlet e o teste de caixa clara e escura são usados para avaliar a atividade ansiolítica. Camundongos foram administrados com diazepam 1,0 mg/kg, i.p., enquanto o extrato hidroalcoólico de AbM (136,50 e 273,0 mg/kg, respectivamente) foi administrado por via oral, que exibiu redução acentuada no número de mármores enterrados em comparação com o grupo de controle de veículo. Camundongos administrados com diazepam 1,0 mg/kg, i.p. e a administração oral de extrato hidroalcoólico de AbM (136,50 e 273,0 mg/kg, respectivamente) exibiu diminuição significativa na trituração de ninhos em comparação ao grupo de controle de veículo. A administração oral de extrato hidroalcoólico na dose de 136,5mg/kg e 273mg/kg mostrou elevação no tempo gasto na caixa de luz e foi comparável ao grupo tratado padrão, enquanto o tempo gasto por camundongos após a administração oral de extrato hidroalcoólico de Agaricus blazei na dose de 273,0 mg/kg também mostrou elevação e foi mais próximo do grupo tratado padrão (diazepam 1 mg/kg, ip).

The oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract at a dose of 136.5mg/kg and 273mg/kg showed elevation in time spent in light box and was comparable to standard treated group while time spent by mice following oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract of Agaricus blazei at a dose of 273.0 mg/kg also showed elevation and was found to be more near to standard treated group (diazepam 1 mg/kg, i.p.).


Resumo O aumento da ansiedade e dos sintomas depressivos têm relatado sua associação com doenças de longa duração. Por causa dos efeitos indesejáveis dos novos medicamentos disponíveis, os pacientes que administram medicamentos ansiolíticos geralmente interrompem o tratamento antes de estarem completamente recuperados. Portanto, há uma necessidade séria de desenvolver novos medicamentos ansiolíticos. Foi avaliado o efeito ansiolítico do extrato hidroalcoólico de Agaricus blazei em modelos animais. Vinte e quatro camundongos machos (gênero Mus musculus) foram incluídos no estudo. Quatro grupos foram preparados, e cada grupo continha seis animais. Os grupos foram controle de veículo, controle positivo (diazepam 1,0 mg/kg, i.p.), bem como dois grupos de tratamento recebendo extrato hidroalcoólico de Agaricus blazei na dose de 136,50 mg/kg e 273,0 mg/kg por via oral. O teste de enterrar Marble, o teste de retalhamento Nestlet e o teste de caixa clara e escura são usados ​​para avaliar a atividade ansiolítica. INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated profound issues with using the Internet to research health information. For patients recommended a complex operation, such as the Whipple pancreaticoduodenectomy, the quality of health information online has not been appraised. The objective of this study was to define the readability and content quality of YouTube search results for the Whipple pancreaticoduodenectomy. METHODS: The first 100 search results for "whipple procedure" less than 10 min long in English with audio and or text were transcribed. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade defined the reading grade level. High content quality videos were accredited by YouTube in accordance with principles specified by the National Academy of Medicine or mentioned the standard components for a surgical consent. The Anderson-Lau score is a composite of these consent criteria out of a maximum of 8/8. The simplicity of videos for patient education was defined by the DISCERN tool. RESULTS: The reading level of 23% of the top 100 search results met the American average (8th grade). Accreditation was present for 45% and associated with an earlier median search ranking (36 versus 68, P = 0.002) and more 5th-8th grade level material (70% versus 38%, P = 0.014). The median Anderson-Lau score was 3/8 (range = 0/8-7/8) with only 5% achieving 7/8. Only 4% were high quality per DISCERN. CONCLUSIONS: Although accredited videos were more readable, most videos, especially those targeting patients, were beyond the comprehension of the average American. Simpler and higher quality educational materials are needed to inform patients on Whipple pancreaticoduodenectomy beyond their date of clinical diagnosis or surgical consenting.

Extensive investigations have been conducted on the thermoelectric and optoelectronic characteristics of double perovskite compounds using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) approach. Here we investigated Rb2NaGaZ6 (Z = Br, I) to explore its band structure, and electronic, optical and transport properties. Born's stability criteria have confirmed the mechanical stability of these compounds. Analysis of the elastic properties reveals their ductile nature, as indicated by a Poisson coefficient (υ) greater than 0.26 and a Pugh ratio exceeding 1.75 for Rb2NaGaZ6 (Z = Br, I). Computation of the bandgap values shows that both compositions possess a direct bandgap nature, with respective values of 2.90 eV and 1.25 eV. This suggests that substituting Br with I brings the band edges closer together, resulting in a decrease in the bandgap value. The optical properties are assessed based on the absorption coefficient, reflectivity, and dielectric constants. The thermoelectric properties, including thermal and electrical conductivities, power factor (PF), and figure of merit (ZT), are determined using the BoltzTrap code. The ZT values indicate that both compositions exhibit promising potential for various transportation applications.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women are considered a high-risk group for COVID-19 due to their increased vulnerability to viral infections. The impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women is not well understood, and there is a need for data on managing severe COVID-19 in pregnant patients. This retrospective descriptive cohort study described the characteristics, hospital stay, interventions, and outcomes of pregnant patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) with severe COVID-19 pneumonia in Qatar. METHODS: Data were collected from medical records and chart reviews of pregnant women admitted to Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) with COVID-19 pneumonia from March 01, 2020, to July 31, 2021. The inclusion criteria encompassed pregnant women with a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) antigen test or radiological changes at admission, requiring respiratory support, and hospitalized for more than 24 hours. RESULTS: A total of 43 pregnant women were included in this study. Most patients were admitted during the first wave of the pandemic, with a median gestational age of 212 days [interquartile range 178-242 days] at presentation. The most common respiratory support methods were high-flow nasal cannula, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, and invasive positive pressure ventilation. Convalescent plasma therapy was administered to 58% of patients, and tocilizumab was used in 28%. Renal replacement therapy was required by 4.6% of patients and 7% required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. CONCLUSION: This study provides valuable insights into the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant patients admitted to the ICUs in Qatar. The results suggest that pregnant patients with COVID-19 pneumonia require close monitoring and appropriate interventions to minimize adverse outcomes for both mother and fetus. The data may contribute to future guidelines and management strategies for severe COVID-19 in pregnant patients.

This meta-analysis was done to investigate the role of intrathecal midazolam in lower limb surgeries regarding prolongation of spinal block, postoperative pain control and associated side effects. The included studies reported onset and duration of sensory and motor block, time to first request analgesia, 24h opioid consumption, postoperative pain control, and associated side effects following use of intrathecal midazolam for lower limb surgeries. This review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines and using the online databases, Medline, Science Direct, Google scholar and Cochrane library. We registered this review with the PROSPERO database (ID-CRD42022346361) in August 2022. A total of 10 randomised controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis. Our results showed patients receiving 1mg intrathecal midazolam showed significantly faster onset of sensory block [P=.001 (CI: -0.98, -0.31)]. Duration of sensory and motor block were also significantly prolonged in intrathecal midazolam group [P<.00001 (CI: 18.08, 39.12), P=.002 (CI: 0.45, 2). Intrathecal midazolam also increased the time to first request analgesia [P=.0003, (CI: 1.22, 4.14)]. Pain scores at 4 and 12h postoperatively were significantly lower in patients receiving intrathecal midazolam [P=.00001 (CI: -1.20, -0.47) and P=.05 (CI: -0.52, -0.01) respectively]. In conclusion, the addition of intrathecal midazolam to local anesthetics in lower limb surgeries results in early onset of sensory and motor block. It also increases the duration of sensory and motor block. The time to first request analgesia is increased. VAS pain scores at 4 and 12h postoperatively were also lower without any increased side effects.

In this paper, we propose a novel fiber-optical dosimetry sensor for radiation measurement in biological applications. A two-dimensional (2D) fiber-optical dosimeter (FOD) for radiation measurement is considered. The sensors are arranged as a 2D array in a tailored holder. This FOD targets accurate industrial and medical applications which seek more tolerant radiation dosimeters. In this paper, the FOD sensors are subjected to gamma-ray radiation facilities from the 137Cs gamma-ray irradiator type for low doses and 60Co gamma-ray irradiator for high doses. For better evaluation of radiation effects on the FOD sample, the measurements are performed using eight sensors (hollow cylinder shape) with two samples in each dose. The sensors were measured before and after each irradiation. To the author's knowledge, the measurements of FOD transplanted inside animals are presented for the first time in this paper. A 2D simulation program has been implemented for numerical simulation based on the attenuation factors from the absorbed dose inside the in vivo models. A comparison between the FOD and the standard thermo-luminescence detector is presented based on the test of in vivo animal models. The results indicate that the proposed FOD sensor is more stable and has higher sensitivity.

The purpose of this research exploration was to investigate the impact of video prompting procedures on the acquisition of electronic journaling skill, and how to create and present scientific knowledge previously learned by students with intellectual disabilities. Using single-subject, multiple probe, and multiple baseline-design across four participants with moderate intellectual disabilities, results revealed that participants could increase their number of correct, completed steps for creating their electronic journals for the science classes. Results also showcased that participants had an opportunity to encounter the tablet-based, evidence-based instructional strategy to learn how to introduce their scientific pieces, talk about and communicate their ideas and thoughts. Implications for future research and practice were provided.

Influenza A virus (IAV) is known to cause mild to severe respiratory illness. Under some conditions, the infection can lead to pneumonia (viral or bacterial), acute respiratory distress syndrome, and other complications that can be fatal, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions. Despite previous studies, little is known about the host immune response and neuroimmune interactions in IAV infection. Using RNA sequencing, we performed transcriptomic analysis of murine lung tissue 21 days post infection (dpi) with IAV (H1N1) in order to find the differentially expression genes (DEGs) related to the host immune response and neuroimmune interactions inside the lung during recovery. Among 792 DEGs, 434 genes were up-regulated, whereas 358 genes were down-regulated. The most prominent molecular functions of the up-regulated genes were related to the immune response and tissue repair, whereas a large proportion of the down-regulated genes were associated with neural functions. Although further molecular/functional studies need to be performed for these DEGs, our results facilitate the understanding of the host response (from innate immunity to adaptive immunity) and neuroimmune interactions in infected lungs at the recovery stage of IAV infection. These genes might have potential uses as mechanistic/diagnostic biomarkers and represent possible targets for anti-IAV therapies.
